Thermal errors of machine tools are a major contributor to inaccuracies produced workpieces. Especially, the reduction thermal without increasing energy consumption tool and shop floor due exact air conditioning has great social, scientific, industrial relevance. Therefore, Institute Machine Tools Manufacturing (IWF) at ETH Zürich set up series three lab courses increase awareness undergraduate students on this important topic. In first course elaborate how carbon footprint can be minimized over whole live cycle including manufactured products. Specifically, measure demand analyze efficiency most components 5-axis in different operating conditions. The second focuses chain causes, which describes physical fundamentals leading deformations tools. Temperature displacement measurements as well finite-element simulations purpose-built test bench visualize characteristics causes. third completes topic by dealing with model-based compensation strategies, enables shift from resource-based towards intelligence-based strategies for errors. evaluate behaviour an on-machine measurement learn create data-based error models.
